In September 2024, I was the Artist-in-Residence at the Taft-Nicholson Center,  Lakeview, MT.  About 40 miles west of Yellowstone NP, the area is part of its larger ecosystem.  The Centennial Valley is roughly an elongated oval shape and ringed by mountains.  The Red Rocks Wildlife Refuge sits directly across from the Center.

The Cabin

The artist is housed in a one room cabin which has all the modern amenities.

Studio Space

The Residency has abundant studio spaces:  2 smaller spaces attached to the artist cabin and a stand alone converted school house.

Lower Red Rock Lake Boat Launch

The Refuge is home to all sorts of wildlife.   Often in mornings one can hear the coyote packs barking across the valley.  On a still morning, the rush of water isn't a burbling creek, but the sound of ducks moving about on the lake.  I probably enjoy the Trumpeter Swans the most.

Mt. Baldy pullout along South Valley Road

I discovered that this high point in the road that runs along the base of the Centennial Mountains had the kind of view I like, even in both directions.

A painting from either direction!

Wildfire smoke moved into the valley 9/9/24 and was an eerie sight.  Fortunately, the severity was brief; strong winds the following afternoon helped clean the Valley.

On the east end of the Refuge,  a great collection of Centennial Mountain and Butte shapes (Nemesis, Red Rock).
